Renewable energy from manure

Challenge

Burfeindt–Tomforde Energieerzeugungs GmbH & Co KG supplies the surrounding villages with electricity and heat from its biogas plant in Selsingen in northern Germany. Like many other biogas plant operators, Burfeindt-Tomforde is currently focusing on converting its plant to use residual materials in order to benefit from GHG quota remuneration and utilise manure from local farms for energy production.

Solution

Within two years, Brandt installed two new solids feeders with capacities of 90 and 115 m³ at the biogas plant, which can accommodate various types of waste such as manure or dried chicken manure. An integrated screw conveyor system transports the mass to the downstream customised shredding and pumping technology. The scales and automatic dosing system ensure that the substrate is fed evenly throughout the day. In a second step, a shredding unit ensures that the solids are shredded and mixed with liquid to produce a pumpable, homogeneous biosuspension, which is then conveyed to the fermenter.

Brandt planned, designed and implemented the integration of the entire feeding technology as general contractor, thereby ensuring optimisation of the entire fermentation process. The Burfeindt-Tomforde biogas plant not only benefits from lower input and operating costs, but the plant is also future-oriented with the switch to residual materials for the production of renewable energies from biogas – and in future even biomethane.
